Description
Embark on an extraordinary full-day adventure to Mount Zeus (Zas), the highest and most iconic peak in Naxos and the Cycladic islands. Locally known as Mount Zas, this majestic mountain, standing at 1004m (3294ft), derives its name from the Olympian god Zeus, who, according to Greek mythology, was raised in this very location.
Your certified guide will commence the journey with a 20 to 30 minute drive through the picturesque Naxian countryside, starting from Naxos town. The hike, a loop trail spanning approximately 5km (3.1 miles) to the summit with an elevation gain of 605m (1985ft), begins and ends in Filoti, the largest village on the island.
As you ascend, relish the easy to moderate difficulty level of the trail and immerse yourself in the breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and neighboring islands. On a clear day, the sight extends all the way to the coastlines of Turkey and Santorini.
At the summit of Zeus, a spectacular 360 view awaits, providing an ideal setting to savor a delicious snack. The descent, another 5km (3.1 miles), leads you to the western side of Mount Zeus, where you'll have the opportunity to explore the fascinating Cave of Zeus. This geological wonder features imposing stalactites and stalagmites and is home to the local species of microbats.
Further down, the adventure takes you to the serene green oasis of Aria spring, where you can quench your thirst with fresh mountain water. Concluding the journey, the guide will lead you back to Filoti and your accommodation, wrapping up an unforgettable day filled with mythology, natural beauty, and outdoor exploration.
