This hike will lead you to the summit of the most popular mountain in the Cyclades complex: Mount Zas (Zeus). Once you reach the summit, there are many things to be proud of. Not only will you be at the highest point in the Cyclades (1,003 m / 3,290 feet), but you will have hiked to the mountain's summit where Zeus, the Father and King of the Olympian Gods, was raised. That is why the mountain is named after Zeus (known as "Zas" in the local dialect of Naxos).
This enjoyable, moderately challenging hike starts from the small chapel of Agia Marina near the village of Danakos. The trail you will follow is the same path that people have used to reach the mountain's summit since ancient times. As you ascend, you will come across the fascinating inscription from the 4th century BC carved into a rock: "MOUNT OF ZEUS OF MILITOS." What does the inscription say?
