Dovecotes are considered to be a trademark of Tinos, because on this Cyclades island one can find the greatest number of dovecotes than in any other place in Greece. In old ages, people bred doves for food and also used bird droppings in the fields as it is an excellent fertilizer.
What is special about dovecotes is the ornate exterior decoration that adorns the walls of the building. This classifies them worldwide as unique monuments of folklore art.
The route starts at the bridge near Agapi village and you hike parallel to the river. Along the way, you meet several dovecotes scattered in the small valley and have a break for a historical description.
Then you cross the river entering Agapi village, one of the oldest and most picturesque villages on the island. There, you can have a break at a local cafe in the village square. The route ends by returning to the starting point from a different route.
